The 2016 Sam's Furniture Teacher Appreciation Day celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Springdale Chamber creating an event specifically to acknowledge and thank the city's educators for their work. The event is the largest of its kind in the nation with almost 2,000 teachers honored and more than $100,000 in member-donated gifts given away.
Major sponsors join with exhibitor vendors to provide a meal and thousands of dollars in door prize giveaways to the educators during the annual event. Combined with a complimentary meal by McDonald's and Hiland Dairy, the event is a high-energy, fun kickoff to the new school year.
First-year teachers are recognized and 25-year teachers are also honored during the event.
Joe Donaldson of event-sponsor Sam's Furniture awarded two $10,000 home furniture giveaways to deserving teachers. Julie Hererra of Shaw Elementary and Kyla Gillespie (shown at left) of George Junior High were the lucky recipients. Susie Everett drew the name of Sonora Elementary School kindergarten teacher Christy King for the free use of a car for a year. King chose a black Jeep Wrangler.
Senator John Boozman and Governor Asa Hutchinson each spoke during the two-session event. Mayor Doug Sprouse proclaimed August 8, 2016 as Teacher Appreciation Day in Springdale to honor the 50th anniversary of the event and the city's educators.
Seventy Springdale Chamber members hosted vendor booths during the Vendor Fair and an additional 120 volunteers participated during the event held at the Springdale High School Pat Walker Performing Arts Center.
