Springdale’s Runway Bike Park and Fitzgerald Mountain Bike Trail are two big reasons our city was included among the nation’s top 20 performing cities in the PeopleForBikes 2019 rankings. The rankings were released this week and highlight Northwest Arkansas’ growing enthusiasm for biking and healthy lifestyle choices.
The PlacesForBikes City Ratings uses a scoring system to rank cities based on five key areas: Ridership (how many people ride bikes), Safety (how safe is it to ride bikes), Network (how easy is it for people to get where they need to go), Acceleration (how fast is the bike network expanding) and Reach (how well the network serves all neighborhoods in the community).
The Runway Bike Park, host to last year’s Red Bull Pump Track World Championship, gives cyclists of all age and skill levels a family-friendly environment that helps beginners and seasoned riders improve. The nearby Fitzgerald Mountain Bike Trail is an 11-mile route that’s rapidly becoming one of the region’s most popular off-road trails. The first phase of Dean’s Trail, an off-road shared use trail in east Springdale, opens to the public May 15 with a ribbon cutting ceremony just south of Parsons Stadium.
Springdale is joined by Bentonville and Fayetteville in the 2019 PlacesForBikes Top 20 rankings. Four cities in Colorado are in the Top 20, including top-ranked Boulder. Arkansas and New York are the only other states to have as many as three cities included on the best performing list.
May is National Bike Month with Bike to Work Week set for May 13-19 and Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 17.
